      DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS

Mathematics has been the language for the thousands of years and it is remarkably successful. The applicability of mathematics can lie anywhere on a spectrum from the completely trivial to the utterly mysterious. At the one extreme, mathematics is used outside of mathematics in cases which range from everyday calculations like the attempt to balance one’s checkbook through the most demanding abstract modeling of subatomic particles. The development of mathematics is intimately interwoven with the progress of civilization, influencing the course of history through its application to science and technology. Despite is arcane appearance from the outside look in, the present abstract of its highly sophisticated and specialized state of mathematics is the natural evolution of the subject.

The evolution of mathematics to its contemporary state has witnessed fundamental changes in concepts, organization, scope, outlook and practice through its seven vital stages such as Proto Mathematics, here the subject was purely empirical, Ancient mathematics, Classical Mathematics, Mercantile Mathematics, Pre-Modern Mathematics, Modern Mathematics and the subject has reached in its peak during  contemporary Post Modern Mathematics Period.Mathematics reveals hidden patterns that help us understand the world around us. Now much more than arithmetic and geometry, mathematics today is a diverse discipline that deals with data, measurements, and observations from science; with inference, deduction, and proof; and with mathematical models of natural phenomena, of human behavior, and of social systems.Mathematics is a science of pattern and order. Its domain is not molecules or cells, but numbers, chance, form, algorithms, and change. As a science of abstract objects, mathematics relies on logic rather than on observation as its standard of truth, yet employs observation, simulation, and even experimentation as means of discovering truth.

The main branches of mathematics are algebra, number theory, geometry, arithmetic and statistics. Based on these branches, the other branches have been discovered. Mathematics has become vaster over the years. Mathematics is broadly divided into pure mathematics and applied mathematics. Mathematics is the theoretical science of quantity, number and space, either as abstract concepts (pure mathematics) or as applied to other disciplines (Applied mathematics). The demand for mathematics experts has grown exponentially in a number of careers- and so has interest in these jobs. According to Mathematical Association of America, math professions are increasingly attractive. In fact mathematician, actuary, statistician jobs are among the most promising career paths based on their income levels, growth outlook and low stress work environments.

    STATISTICS

Statistics is a mathematical body of science that pertains to the collection, analysis, interpretation or explanation and presentation of data or as a branch of mathematics. Statistics is form of mathematical analysis that uses quantified model, representation and synopses for a given set of experimental data or real life studies.

The term statistics is ultimately derived from the New Latin statisticum collegiums (“council of state”) and the Italian word statista (“statesman” or “politician”)...Thus, the original principal purpose of Statistik  was data to be used by governmental and (often centralized) administrative bodies. “ Sir Ronald Aylmer Fisher” (17 February 1890-29 July 1962) was a British statistician, geneticist, eugenicist, and professor. For his work in statistics, he has been described as “a genius who almost single-handedly created the foundations for modern statistical science and “the single most important figure in 20th century statistics.

The initial development of statistics in the 16th and 17th centuries was motivated by the need to make sense of the large amount of data collected by population surveys in the emerging European nation states...In the 19th century, Statistics started to be used to make sense of the wealth of new scientific data. Statistics help in providing data as well as tools to analyze the data. Some powerful techniques are index numbers, time series analysis, and also forecasting. These are immensely useful in the analysis of data in economic planning, business forecasting, financial analysis ,weather forecasting etc....

Statistics is very important in education as it helps in collecting, presenting analysis and interpreting data. It also helps in drawing general conclusion. l Statistics is very useful in doing research work. Statistical knowledge helps you use the proper methods to collect the data, employ the correct analyses, and effectively present the results. Statistics is a crucial process behind how we make discoveries in science, make decisions based on data, and make predictions.

Statistics in various field such as business, industry, agriculture, government, private, computer science, scientific, health science & other disciplines. After completing you study in statistics, you can also apply for the civil services, Indian Statistical services & Indian economic services exam. Statistics is essential in developing assessments of teacher effectiveness and models to represent student learning. Statisticians are also working to develop new instructional methods in statistics education.A degree in statistics will lead to opportunities all over the world! Statisticians have a unique set of analytical skills that make them valuable in almost every area of industry and science.

    ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

Department of Mathematics and Statistics of KMEA College of Arts and Science were established in the year of 2013. Since then, the department has been working hard to mould our students for their better future. Mathematics and statistics is in corporate into the syllabus of B.Com, BBA and BCA. The department is credited with the experienced faculties with conscientiousness and flexibility. The department provides excellent ambience and for the students to learn and acquire problem solving skill. Students are molded with a desire to make a different in the society. Teaching learning process involves extensive classroom instructions. This is continuously monitored and evaluated through a internal evaluation system as prescribed by the university.

    VISION

Propagation and promotion of mathematics and statistics culture through qualitatively upgraded education. We envision a personality enhancement of the students which equip them to grab opportunities offered by the times at a global level.

    MISSION

    • To improve the continuous academic quality of teaching, learning and research in department.
    • To impart knowledge in the realm of Mathematics which is functionally useful and socially relevant.
    • To Empower the students to meet the global challenges of the present scenario.

    OBJECTIVES OF DEPARTMENT

    • The aims of teaching and learning mathematics are to encourage and enable students to recognize that mathematics permeates the world around us.
    • In addition to the teaching of Statistics, we aim to promote the decision making skill of our students.
