The evolution of commerce is traced back from human civilization. The human wants increased with the advance of civilization. They could not produce everything they needed. People came to know that man is skillful in producing a few commodities. He can make them quite rapidly in large numbers. So, at this stage people started producing excess of their needs what they could produce. People started searching for persons who could get their surplus products in exchange for those goods, which they required.
Commerce made its beginning and exchange of goods for goods (barter system ) began to be practiced. In order to remove the drawbacks of barter system and difficulties of vast transactions, a monetary aspects is emerged and followed by several other improvements of commercial activities like trade, transportation, warehousing, distribution, advertisement, communication, banking, insurance, etc. greatly helped to develop commerce. The division of work and specialization helped producers to concentrate on few products only. They started producing goods not only for the local markets but also for national markets. The specialization in different fields helped the growth of industry and commerce. The development of transport increased the trade manifold. All these developments were responsible for developing commerce at national level.
Commerce today keeps evolving, taking advantage of similarly quick advances in technology that support new ways of buying and selling, and make it easier than ever for merchants to connect with customers via an online store.
Through technological advancement in e-commerce, people have been facing major changes in every term. Electronic commerce draws on such technologies as electronic funds transfer, supply chain management, Internet marketing, online transaction processing, Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), inventory management systems, and automated data collection systems.
Modern electronic commerce typically uses the World Wide Web at least at one point in the transaction’s life-cycle, although it may encompass a wider range of technologies such as e-mail, mobile devices and telephones as well. In the emerging global economy, e-commerce and e-business have increasingly become a necessary component of business strategy and a strong catalyst for economic development. The integration of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in business has revolutionized relationships within organizations and those between and among organizations and individuals. E-Commerce influence on various discipline such as Marketing, Finance and Accounting, production and operations management, Economics, Management Information System, Human resource management, Business Law and ethics.
The Italian Lucca Pacioli, Father of Accounting, introduced double entry system of accounting which established a framework for accounting that has endured essentially unchanged for 500 years. Accounting systems existed well before Pacioli, but his was the first to present the double entry accounting system in book form as an efficient means of keeping business records and computing profits. It is understood that Pacioli advocated the use of double entry accounting because improved records would lead to improved business operation and profits. Even though double entry system of book keeping, computerized accounting also followed as the part of curriculum. The major contributors in the management field were F.W. Taylor,( father of scientific management) and Hentry Fayol ( father of Modern management).
The Department of Commerce has completed eight years of existence, proving its excellence in the field of Commerce. The dept was established in the year 2013 with B.com marketing as its core course. From 2014 onwards B.Com Model –II Computer Application & in 2015, Finance and Taxation was started and the M.Com finance in 2019. M.Com Management and Information Technology also introduced in 2020. The syllabus of B.Com is continuously restructured as per the university guidelines and norms. The department is imparting education to undergraduate and post graduate students. The department is enriched with 12 lecturers who contribute to the overall development of the students. Department Envisions to provide excellent and value based commerce education.With respect to students, the focus was to introduce new teaching methodology that would engage them more thoroughly and enhance the learning experience. Many students– centric initiatives. were introduced.
The peer learning system was introduced for all the first year classes. Groups were made blending a mix of gender, learning abilities, language and region. Advanced learners were identified as group leaders to facilitate learning of group members within and outside class-rooms. Leaders directly connect with the class / subject teachers with problems of individual group members that were addressed appropriately. This peer learning exercise proved to be advantageous in two ways- firstly the students benefitted from the collaborative and cohesive learning and secondly the teachers were able to focus on mentoring. Student mentoring and attendance follow was continuously monitored by all class teachers which reflected in their attendance percentages and performance in examinations.
The style of administration was to involve faculty members in the decision making process through discussions and collaboration of ideas. This strategy solicited their committed participation in implementation and execution. Every idea / initiative of the department was discussed in the department meetings; group-wise deliberations were made and were open to suggestions and criticisms. Groups were consciously made with a blend of seniors and juniors, or based on different specializations as the case maybe to elicit profound insights. Responsibilities for various activities were delegated on rotation to faculties based on their expertise, ensuring their active involvement and balanced work load for all. The importance of proper documentation of all activities conducted was emphasized from the beginning and brought commendations during the quality audit process. Some of the initiatives were bench-marked as best practices - viz- curriculum review process, Learning circles discussions and their outcomes, student-centric pedagogies, special students mentoring, special supplementary coaching etc. As the part of curriculum one day industrial visit conducted by B.Com CBCS 2017 admissions and each year. Study tour also conducted.

The activities of the PG Department of Commerce are spearheaded by the Commerce Association of KMEA College of Arts and Science each year. Theassociation has each and every student of the department as its active members. The association is led by a body consisting of Association President,Vice-President, Secretary and treasurer, the perfects of each class under the guidance of Head of the Department, Association- in-charge teachers and other faculties of the department. The association plays an important role in making the department a front runner, in and out of the college.
The Commerce Association during the academic year 2020-21 conducted programmes with the following objectives.
* To bring about an overall development in the outlook of its members byimparting the necessary skills.
* To develop the soft skills and leadership skills among students through conducting various programmes.
* To channel the vision and mission of students towards lucrative career opportunity.
* To develop a harmonious relationship with the fellow students of other college by way of participating in the activities and competitions held inother campus.
* To acquire event hosting skills by way of conducting inter collegiate, inter department and inter class programmes.
* To put the concept of “Espirit De Crops” into practice.
The inauguration of the Commerce Association – ‘COMFIESTA 2020’ for the academic year 2019-2020 took place on 1st February 2020 at 10.00 AM at KMEA College of Arts and Science College Mini Auditorium. The programme started by prayer. The welcome address was delivered by Asst.Prof. Bubina Abdulkhadir, Head of the P.G. Department of Commerce. Presidential address was delivered by Prof. Abdul Karim, Principal, KMEA College of Arts and Science, Kuzhivelipady. The chief guest Mr. Sangeeth Vinod, Singer from Padam Namuk Padam Television reality show, inaugurated the ceremony. Master Althaf A Shanavas, Chairman was delivered felicitation and Finally, the event came to a close with the vote of thanks by Asst.Prof. Charley Bivera. After the formal function, the various cultural programmes and prize distribution ceremony took place for the students in academic excellence.
